Importance of the Indian Ocean for simulating rainfall anomalies over eastern and southern Africa

The relative contributions of the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean sea surface temperatures (SSTs) to the rainfall variability over eastern, central, and southern Africa during austral spring-summer are examined. The variability of African rainfall is statistically related to both oceans, but the variability in the two oceans is also related. To separate the effects of the Indian and Pacific Ocea...

Extreme wet years over southern Africa: Role of Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures

[1] Southern Africa is a predominantly semiarid region with a high degree of interannual rainfall variability. Although much of the recent climate research has focused on the causes of drought events, the region has also experienced extremes of above average rainfall, the most recent examples being the major flooding episodes that devastated Mozambique during 2000 and 2001. This paper investiga...

Glacial-interglacial vegetation dynamics in south eastern Africa depend on sea surface temperature variations in the west Indian Ocean

by the Marion Dufresne from the Indian Ocean ∼120 km south of the Limpopo River mouth. The sedimentation at the site is slow and continuous. The upper 6m (down till 342 ka) have been analysed for pollen and spores at millennial resolution. The terrestrial pollen assemblages indicate that during interglacials the vegetation of eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique largely consisted of eve...

Towards better Malaria Epidemic Surveillance, Preparedness and Response in Southern Africa

Malaria is a major public health problem for countries of southern Africa and the Indian Ocean epidemiological bloc. Transmission of malaria by epidemic begins when the ability of anophelines to spread malaria increases due to changes in their density, human biting rate or longevity. It is when cases of malaria are reintroduced into an already suitable environment due to neglect, breakdown or n...

Impacts of the ENSO Modoki and other Tropical Indo-Pacific Climate-Drivers on African Rainfall

The study diagnoses the relative impacts of the four known tropical Indo-Pacific drivers, namely, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), ENSO Modoki, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and Indian Ocean Basin-wide mode (IOBM) on African seasonal rainfall variability. The canonical El Niño and El Niño Modoki are in general associated with anomalous reduction (enhancement) of rainfall in southern (northern)...
